Stimson task force urges broader role for nuclear labs

A bipartisan task force proposed that U.S. nuclear weapons laboratories be spun out of the Energy Department to become the center of an independent Agency for National Security Applications. The task force, formed by the Ploughshares-funded Stimson Center, recommended making wider use of the labs for other, non-nuclear research to assure "the nation's global science and technology leadership in the 21st century."
