Yasmeen Silva on Mobilizing Against Nuclear Weapons

Beyond the Bomb organizer Yasmeen Silva at Chain Reaction 2018

This year's Chain Reaction 2018: Leadership + Democracy in San Francisco on June 25, 2018 featured Yasmeen Silva, field organizer for Beyond the Bomb, a people-powered campaign working to free the planet from the threat of nuclear weapons. We had the privilege of hearing her speak about her efforts to mobilize a grassroots movement to stop nuclear war and eliminate nuclear weapons. Watch her remarks in the video above.

The event also featured Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman, author and producer Eric Schlosser, and former Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, and was a special tribute to William J. Perry, 19th US Secretary of Defense.

William J. Perry spoke at length about today’s nuclear threats including North Korea and Iran, with Ploughshares Fund President Joe Cirincione and Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman in a panel discussion: Leadership + Democracy. William J. Perry was given a lifetime achievement award, presented by Philip Yun, Ploughshares Fund Executive Director & COO.

Co-Host for the event, Noosheen Hashemi, president and founder of The HAND Foundation opened the evening, and Mary Lloyd Estrin, chair of the Ploughshares Fund Board of Directors from 1998 to 2018 introduced our esteemed speakers. The event concluded with a call to action by Rachel Pike, treasurer of the Ploughshares Fund Board of Directors.

Yasmeen Silva and others like her are leading the way toward a safer, more secure world. Learn more about Beyond the Bomb in our grantee spotlight.
