Nuclear disarmament commission says global elimination possible by 2025

A draft report of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, set up by the Japanese and Australian governments last year, has concluded that nuclear weapons can be eliminated from the world beginning in 2025. Former Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans of the Ploughshares-funded International Crisis Group chair the Commission, whose report states that nuclear weapons can be eliminated under a three-stage process in which the role of nuclear weapons is first lowered by having nuclear powers - led by the United States - limit the purpose of their arsenals to deterrence.  The final version of the report is due to be compiled this autumn.
