House Budget Committee cuts Obama's Foreign Affairs budget request

The House Budget Committee is recommending a $5.35 billion cut from the Obama Administration’s international affairs budget request, in contrast with the Chairman’s recommendation to fund DOD at the full amount requested. That amount also includes funding for nuclear activities at the Department of Energy. Dr. Gordon Adams of the Ploughshares-funded Stimson Center commented the cuts reflect pressures to reduce non-defense spending, part of an effort to reduce the federal deficit, but also reflect Congress’s reluctance to consider all elements of national security spending together.
