Livermore Marks Hiroshima Day by Looking Closer to Home

“In Hiroshima, there is a stone monument that says ‘Please sleep in rest. We will not repeat the same mistake.’ But we did. This time, by our own hands. Right now, in Japan, nuclear power plant radiation is affecting citizens physically and mentally as it was in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
Exchange student Saori Matsuoka delivered these remarks at the August 6 Hiroshima Day rally in Livermore, California where close to 250 participants converged. Her remarks brought the memory of a nation’s tragedy into the present, and reminded us of the inherent danger of nuclear technology. Reinforcing that message were additional speakers, including, Ploughshares Fund affiliates Arjun Makhijani, President of Institute for Energy and Environmental Research and Marylia Kelley of TriValley CAREs.
After listing the historic health effects of weapons work at Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Weapons Laboratory, Kelley turned to the costs. “As for Livermore Lab, 89% of its more than 1.2 BILLION dollars will be spent on nuclear weapons activities in the coming year. This means the continued research and development of new and modified U.S. nuclear weapons even as we close schools, libraries and health services because we don't have ‘enough money.’”

In addition, TriValley CAREs set up tables at the MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) concert on August 7, a benefit aimed at disaster relief in Japan and for organizations worldwide promoting safe, non-nuclear energy, The Bay Area line-up featured Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Jason Mraz, The Doobie Brothers, Tom Morello, John Hall, Kitaro, Jonathan Wilson, Sweet Honey in the Rock.

fukushima
There are still earthquakes happening in Japan. Fukushima this last week had to 5.0's right under them, and no mention of it in mainstream news. Everyone wants to know more about the elections and economy while 14000 people have already died directly from Fukushima in the USA. Please keep up on this blog and don't give up. If you remain a source of information, soon, the public will come to this blog again. Our food is beginning to get contaminated, es we are running out of canned and boxed frozen foods prepared prior to March 11, 2011. There is no more reactor 3 by the way, it is totally gone, yet nothing in the news. I know we all have lives, but what better reason than to keep up on this blog? We need to keep our lives, and the amount of nuclear disasters (close calls and outright leaks) here in USA since Fukushima is amazing. Please continue the work. it deserves better comments than the "dating" inquiries. This is life and death.

In light of the article and comments above on Fukushima and Hiroshima perhaps your readers would be interested in seeing Professor Kodama speech he gave to the Committee of Health, Labour and Welfare in the Japanese Parliament recently.

I wonder that the parliamentary panel referred to in this article above,"The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency supplied the estimate at a parliamentary panel's request", may in fact be the the Committee on Health, Welfare and Labor in Japan's Lower House in the Diet and so is related to the impassioned and expert speech given to the Committee on by Professor Tatsuhiko Kodama who is a leading cancer researcher and is the head of the Radioisotope Center at the University of Tokyo.
Today I just checked on the Japanese Youtube site and there are many uploadings of Dr Kodama's impassioned and expert speach in Japanese. My guestimate is that collectively the number in Japanese is getting up to 1,000,000 views and still growing. The one with the largest number of views is at 549,659

This would help put world pressure and support getting fast, effective and healthy solutions to this ongoing disaster that threatens so many adults and children now and in the future. Dr Kodama is a medical doctor specialized in cancer treatment and a leading authority on the effects of radiation on people's health at the University of Tokyo and has been working in this field for decades.
