Unmute Yourself: Ukraine

The Unmute Yourself team is back. And, as usual, we’re laser focused on democracy and how it relates to US and international nuclear weapons policy.

Lets “meet” for coffee and discuss perhaps the most-pressing issue of the day, Ukraine. We’ll bring you the latest from smart, talented, and committed partners—speakers to be announced.

The event will run for one hour and include questions from the audience.

About the Speakers

Amy McGrath is a former Marine Corps fighter pilot. She served 20 years in the Marines and was the first woman in the Marine Corps to fly a combat mission in an F/A-18. Following her operational flying tours, Amy was a Congressional Fellow, advising a senior member of the US House of Representatives Armed Services Committee on defense and foreign policy, served in the Pentagon as Marine Corps’ liaison to the State Department and other federal agencies, and senior instructor in the Political Science Department at the US Naval Academy teaching US government and national security. Amy also ran races for US House and Senate in her home state of Kentucky. She earned a master’s degree in global security from Johns Hopkins University, and she is a graduate of the Center for the Study of Weapons of Mass Destruction’s Program for Emerging Leaders at the National Defense University. Amy wrote Honor Bound: An American Story of Dreams and Service, a recount of her experiences flying in the Marines, her combat deployments to Iraq (Kuwait) and Afghanistan, her work as an Air Combat Tactics instructor, and what it was like to fly a fighter jet.

Mari Faines, MSc is director of communications and outreach for Physicians for Social Responsibility, a podcast host, and diversity & equity activist. She serves on the Board of Women of Color Advancing Peace and Conflict (WCAPS), UK, and as a Steering Committee Member for their global DEI initiative, Organisations in Solidarity. Mari is founder and host of the WCAPS-UK podcast Got Melanin and is a member of Foreign Policy for America’s NextGen Foreign Policy Initiative. Mari holds degrees from SOAS University of London and Colgate University. She has been published in Inkstick, New America, and on Outrider.org. Her commentary is available on Got Melanin, Press the Button, and Things that Go Boom podcasts.

Emma Claire Foley is senior associate for research & policy at Global Zero. Her research focuses on defense conversion, U.S.-Russia arms control, disarmament, and nuclear security issues. She was a 2018-2019 Nuclear Security Innovation Fellow for N-Square Collaborative, and a 2021 Ploughshares Olum Fellow. Emma Claire holds degrees from Harvard University and the University of Michigan. Emma Claire’s analyses can be found in publications such as Responsible Statecraft and the Guardian.
