Ploughshares Fund’s “Chain Reaction” on June 8 Links People with One Goal: Reduce the Threat of Nuclear Weapons
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 6, 2022)— Ploughshares Fund – the largest foundation singularly focused on reducing the threat of nuclear weapons – will hold its annual “Chain Reaction” event on June 8 during a perilous time for the security of the world.
The live virtual event, which also features an in-person Watch Party in San Francisco, will rally leaders in the nuclear field to advance strategies that promote the reduction and eventual elimination of nuclear weapons. As Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons has enabled its war against Ukraine, the timing of “Chain Reaction” couldn’t be more critical, said Dr. Emma Belcher, President of the fund.
“Our movement has never been more essential than it is now,” Dr. Belcher said. “The Ukraine war has reminded us that the threatened use of nuclear weapons, which seemed to many like a remote possibility not so long ago, is very real and very dangerous. Ploughshares Fund and our grantees seek a better way through our partnership with leading thinkers, advocates, and policy makers around the world.”
Speakers at this year’s event include Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA); Fiona Hill, former senior director for Europe and Russia at the National Security Council and current senior fellow in the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution; Senator Ed Markey (D-MA); Jamal Abdi, President of the National Iranian American Council (NIAC); Istra Fuhrman, Program Assistant for Nuclear Disarmament & Pentagon Spending at Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL); Philip Taubman, author and Consulting Professor at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation; Liv Boeree, broadcaster, champion poker player, and co-founder of Raising for Effective Giving; and Sara Haghdoosti, Executive Director at Win Without War. Dr. Emma Belcher will address the gathering, as will Elizabeth Warner, Managing Director at Ploughshares Fund, and Tom Collina, Director of Policy at Ploughshares Fund.
Speaker Pelosi, who has witnessed Ploughshares Fund’s effectiveness since founder Sally Lilienthal started the foundation in 1981, noted that it has been a leading force for nuclear non-proliferation and that its work remains essential, especially with the rise of new threats.
