Admiral L. Ramdas
Former Commander, Indian Navy
India
Admiral Laxminarayan Ramdas assumed charge of the Indian Navy as the 13th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) in 1990, having served in the Navy since 1953. Upon his retirement in 1993, Admiral Ramdas turned his energies to the cause of nuclear disarmament, traveling around the world calling on governments to take steps to reduce and ultimately eliminate the world's nuclear arsenals. He is not the first military leader to conclude that nuclear weapons must be abolished, but his is the most prominent and eloquent voices to emanate from India.
