Ploughshares Fund is pleased to work with some of the smartest individuals, organizations and experts in the world. As often as possible, we strive to highlight the work and passions of the many talented individuals who we partner with in our efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons.

  • Earlier this year, we asked our followers to tell us a little bit about themselves and what aspects of Ploughshares Fund’s work matter most to them. I’d like to share some of the highlights.

  • White Paper: Changing Cultural Conceptions of Nuclear Weapons

Nuclear weapons have been around for almost 70 years. In that time, nuclear weapons have become just a synonym for “the ultimate weapon;” Hollywood’s trump card in case of dangerous terrorists, deranged dictators or alien attack.

It’s as if we have collectively forgotten the real horror...

  • Faith-based organizations are at the forefront of advocating for historical policy changes to national and foreign policy to create a more just and safer world. Ploughshares Fund sat down with Kate Gould, lead lobbyist on Middle East Policy at the Friend’s Committee on National Legislation, to learn more about their lobbying efforts, including on the current Iran nuclear negotiations.

  • According to a recent interview, the number one worry that keeps the President up at night is "loose nukes." Speaking at the Nuclear Security Summit in March, President Obama expounded on the idea that loose nukes pose the biggest threat to our security: Russia, he says isn’t “the number-one national security threat to the United States. I continue to be much more concerned … with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan.”

  • A Chain Reaction for Peace

"This is more than just enrichment and centrifuges," commented Trita Parsi from the stage at Ploughshares Fund's Chain Reaction gala. "I think we are in front of an opportunity to potentially lose an enemy in the Middle East." It's that opportunity that brought together over 230 people to...

  • Given regional tensions, much of the discourse surrounding Iran’s nuclear capacity centers not on the countries negotiating, but on the security needs of Israel. The vital and diverse discourse around this subject was on display last week at a Jerusalem conference on regional security and foreign policy hosted by Ploughshares Fund grantees The Center for American Progress and Molad: The Center for the Renewal of Israeli Democracy. Designed to cultivate discussion among Israeli and American progressive thinkers, the conference served to highlight the alignment of the countries’ interests and to break past assumptions about Israeli perspectives on nuclear negotiations. As Herzog told Think Progress reporter Benjamin Armbruster: “I think the P5+1 are on top of it.”

To find out, Ploughshares Fund sat down with grantee Joel Wit, experienced U.S. diplomat and an expert on North Korea.

  • Ploughshares Fund is sad to learn of the passing of Jonathan Schell. Jonathan was an inspiration. With his passing the nation has lost a strong voice for democracy.

  • While the rest of the nation is concerned with shrinking budgets, incompetence among the nuclear personnel, and pullback from wars abroad, the Obama Administration’s FY 2015 budget inexplicably calls for an increased nuclear weapons budget. Even more disturbingly, the Administration is calling for a decrease in programs to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and a slowdown in the dismantlement of nuclear weapons that we’ve already committed to destroying.

  • Recent discoveries of fraud and cheating among U.S. nuclear personnel stand in stark contrast to the  Pentagon’s continued support for nuclear weapons programs and budgets. Why do we insist on keeping these obsolete weapons despite their fading utility? To get some answers, we reached out to our grantee, Stephen Young, a senior analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientists. Here, he gives us the expert scoop on how and why the U.S. can get rid of the weapons we don’t need and take better care of the stockpile while it remains.
