From a peak of 7,300 U.S. nuclear weapons deployed in Europe during the Cold War, the number is down to less than 250.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged to be at the forefront of the campaign to achieve “a world that is free from nuclear weapons,” and other European leaders have echoed his call, including calling for the removal of all U.S. nuclear weapons from European soil. France, however, one of the five original nuclear weapon states, remains committed to modernizing its nuclear arsenal.

Pugwash Conferences in Science and International Affairs
