The world still has some 17,000 nuclear weapons—enough to destroy the world many times over. But it used to be even worse. There used to be 70,000. Thanks to the persistence of many dedicated individuals, we have moved step by step away from Cold War nuclear disaster.
Now, together with our dedicated partners, we are moving toward a world where nuclear weapons can never be used again. We are cutting nuclear
budgets, shrinking U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals and countering the doctrines that justify their existence. We are spearheading a national
campaign to guide U.S. policy toward a sustainable, diplomatic solution to Iran’s problematic nuclear program. We are quietly finding ways to remove roadblocks to further negotiations with Russia. And we are supporting on-the ground ventures to ease tensions between India and Pakistan.
We are innovating—seeking new voices, ideas and collaborations that will improve and enhance our efforts. With each new idea, each changed narrative, each reduced budget, each legislative victory, we are making an impact. The world is made a little safer. And we move closer to our ultimate goal.
Since our inception in 1981, Ploughshares Fund has given over $80 million in grants to the smartest and most innovative individuals and organizations working toward our vision of a world where nuclear weapons are never used again.
This year we realized some hard-fought victories – even in an election year in which most tough decisions were kicked down the road. Together with our stellar grantees and support from people like you, we made significant gains:
- We helped prevent a new war in the Middle East;
- We promoted negotiated solutions to nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea;
- We exposed the waste in the nuclear weapons budget; and
- We brought new faces and new voices into the field, all calling for a world free of the threat of nuclear weapons.
While our past funding has brought us great success, there is still work to be done. Throughout 2012, we've refined our approach toward grantmaking in order to deliver an investment strategy that maximizes our supporters' contributions while maintaining and building a community that is ready, willing and able to tackle the challenges ahead. We present this strategy to you, our supporters and friends, in this report and hope that you will join us in shaping a future without nuclear weapons.
The past few years have seen great progress toward our ultimate goal: the elimination of nuclear weapons. Working together with an impressive community of grantees, partner foundations, military leaders, political experts and senior statesmen, we have grown a new, bipartisan consensus that sees nuclear weapons as liabilities, not assets. We have created solutions and dialogue where none existed. And, we have pushed forward policies that are steadily whittling down the world's nuclear arsenals.
We are proud of these successes. But we are not finished yet. From the ratification of the New START treaty to the new debate over nuclear budgets, we are taking advantage of every opportunity, expanding our influence, improving our analysis, and growing our audiences. In a gridlocked political system, in a time of major foriegn policy upheaval, in a world that has grown increasingly unpredictable: we are breaking through.
Two years ago, we told you that this was our moment to transform nuclear weapons policy and make the world safer. We seized the opportunity and got to work. Ploughshares Fund has been at the forefront of the nuclear policy fight - providing the leadership and investment necessary to build momentum behind America’s new nuclear security agenda.
Our investment is paying off. Last year, we saw a global summit to reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism, new policies to reduce the roles and numbers of U.S. nuclear weapons, and outspoken leadership from former senior officials and retired military officials joining the growing bipartisan consensus to shrink global nuclear arsenals and stop the spread of nuclear weapons. That is only the short list.
We’re particularly proud to say that Ploughshares Fund was instrumental in securing the passage of the New Start treaty – which the Senate recently approved.
