Before joining the Stimson Center in 2002, Ellen Laipson served for 25 years in national security positions in government, most recently as Vice Chair of the National Intelligence Council (1997-2002) and Special Assistant to the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1995-97). In those capacities she focused on analysis and policymaking on Middle East and South Asian issues. At the Stimson Center, Laipson directs the Southwest Asia project, which focuses on a range of security issues in the Gulf region. Laipson is a frequent speaker on Middle East issues and on U.S. foreign policy and global trends.
