Continued diplomacy opens path to eliminate nuclear risks

Washington, DC – In response to the P5+1 announcement today extending talks with Iran, Joe Cirincione, President of Ploughshares Fund, a global security foundation, issued the following statement:

“The US and its partners are on the verge of solving one of the world’s thorniest nuclear problems. We have the opportunity to eliminate a nuclear threat without putting troops in harm’s way. Now’s not the time to pack up and go home.

“The interim deal that brought us to this point already froze Iran’s nuclear program and put international inspectors in place. We must not throw away these gains. Continued diplomacy allows us to keep working on a deal that will permanently remove the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapon.”

“Senior statesmen, security experts and the majority of the American people prefer continued diplomacy to military action.”

“Diplomatic efforts have made more progress on Iran’s nuclear program in the last six months than we have in the past 35 years. The finish line is within our sights. It’s time to let diplomacy work.”
