Meet 12 Women Working for Peace
Philanthropists, authors, artists, mothers and advocates; these amazing women are leading the way towards the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.
Women's Security Network
Global security has fundamentally changed. Increasingly complex international politics mean that preventing the use of nuclear weapons - still the world's most dangerous weapon - requires new innovative solutions. Addressing today's problems moves us beyond Cold War concepts into solving problems practically and collaboratively, while including multiple stakeholders.
Composed of leading women philanthropists, the Women's Security Network supports new approaches to preventing conflict and building regional security, particularly in areas where nuclear weapons have exacerbated the dangers of conflict. Funding from this influential group supports innovation both small and large, helping to train imams as peacebuilders in the Pakistani tribal areas, supporting new research efforts on ground-up security approaches by think tanks like the New America Foundation in Pakistan, and ensuring that all voices are heard through support of special opinion research, like a recent poll by Celinda Lake asking women how U.S. defense spending should be allocated. Housed inside Ploughshares Fund, Women's Security Network benefits from the experience and expertise of our program officers, who find and initiate projects most likely to make a difference.
Members of the Women's Security Network do more than write a check, however. In the past, members have:
- Signed op-eds placed in the Minnesota Star Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle
- Served as spokespeople on local radio stations and internet video spots
- Sent out action emails to their colleagues and friends
- Sponsored events in their community highlighting conflict issues
- Consulted on campaign strategy and messaging
- Pooled contributions to provide challenge matches to assist in fundraising efforts
As some of our most important volunteers, Women's Security Network members also have access to the unique resources of Ploughshares Fund to stay abreast of the most important issues in conflict prevention today.
Benefits include:
- Periodic conference calls with leading experts and grantees, giving nuanced perspective and trustworthy facts to supplement the headlines
- Regional events connecting members to some of our most innovative international grantees
- Regular updates on the impact and effectiveness of projects that the Network has supported
Together, we can make a difference. Find out more or join us today.
