Between them, the United States and Russia still hold over 95% of the world's nuclear weapons. Reducing these stockpiles helps increase global stability, builds the international non-proliferation regime and reduces the chances that nuclear materials will fall into the hands of terrorists. After setting September 15 as the date for a Senate Foreign Relations Committee vote on the New START nuclear reductions agreement with Russia, Chairman John Kerry wrote in a letter to his colleagues. “The coming six weeks,” Kerry said, “will provide members ample opportunity to review the materials related to New START.” Read more »

As of August 9th, It's been 247 days since the U.S. and Russia last were able to inspect each other's strategic nuclear arsenals under the provisions of the now-lapsed START I treaty. Read more »

Ploughshares Fund and the Center for Policy Studies (PIR Center) in Russia will co-host an event called "New START Signed, What's Next?"  The event will take place in Moscow June 25, 2010 and will  focus on the critical need for new thinking on arms control and nonproliferation between Russia and the United States.  The event will also address movement toward further arms reductions and cooperation on strategic ballistic missile defenses.   Read more »
