Labs may shift away from nuclear weapons

The Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories may change focus as the Obama administration moves to stop developing new nuclear weapons and reduce stockpiles. The shift will coincide with a government study on whether to move the labs to the Department of Defense. Ivan Oelrich of the Ploughshares-funded Strategic Security Program at the Federation of American Scientists said, if moved to the Defense Department, "(the labs) will have to compete with other, more useful areas of the budget. The military would rather spend the money on tanks and ships."
